red wine cake with a DIY garland cake topper

December 11, 2013

My all-time favorite, especially at Christmas time, is red wine cake. Red wine, almonds and cinnamon are the perfect ingredients for a Christmas cake. And, as the crowning, a self-made garland cake topper with shining copper stars.

red wine cake

- 100 g dark chocolate
- 250 g butter (soft)
- 150 g granulated sugar
- 1 sachet vanilla sugar
- 4 eggs (medium size)
- 250 g all-purpose flour
- 3 tsp. backing powder
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 125 ml red wine (dry)
- 100 g ground almonds
for the frosting:
- 150 g powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp. water

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grate the dark chocolate and grease a cake pan.
For the batter beat the butter with the granulated sugar until fluffy. Then add the eggs and mix in. Mix up the flour with the backing powder, the cinnamon and the cacao powder and mix in briefly. Finally mix in the grated chocolate, the ground almonds and the red wine.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 60 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out.
For the frosting stir the powdered sugar with water until smooth and glaze the cooled off cake with it.

garland cake topper

For the garland cake topper you will need two wooden skewers, copper mirror cardboard, a star punch, yarn and glue.
Punch out 8 stars and glue them pairwise together with the yarn between. Fix the ends of the yarn on the wooden skewers and stick them into the cake. Finished!
